A block of flats beside Hounslow Heath has been so badly ravaged by fire it may have to be demolished.
Up to 75 firefighters spent nearly 12 hours tackling the blaze in Bennett Close, Hounslow, on Monday.
One man was rescued and 11 lead to safety when the fire broke out just after 9am yesterday. It was not under control until 8.30pm and a handful of firefighters are still at the scene damping the flats and assessing the wreckage.
Fire investigators said the damage is so extensive surveyors are discussing whether the newly built block can be saved.
A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said part of the roof had collapsed, about 40 per cent of the third floor had been destroyed and there was extensive damage to the first and second floors.
The cause remains unclear but it is not being treated as suspicious.
