Firefighters have praised neighbours who stayed in their flats as they successfully tackled a blaze in a blocks of flats in Green Dragon Lane, Brentford today (April 8).

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at 12:28pm to reports of a fire at a 14-storey building in the iconic Green Dragon Estate, which can be seen by thousands every day as they drive across the elevated section of the A4 Great West Road.

An LFB spokeswoman confirmed a flat on the fifth floor was alight and six fire engines and 35 firefighters were at the scene battling the blaze which they managed to bring under control within an hour.

Nobody is believed to have been injured and the fire brigade praised neighbours unaffected by the fire and smoke for staying put like they recommend in the LFB's Know The Plan campaign which was recently launched.

Station manager, Adam Campbell who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters quickly got the fire under control and stopped it from spreading to surrounding flats. Four people from an adjacent flat left the building before fire crews arrived.

“All other residents stayed inside their flats which was much safer than attempting to escape which could have been risky due to the smoke and firefighting equipment. Living in a flat is not more dangerous than living in a house, but it’s important to know what your fire plan is and how you’d escape if a fire did break out.”

Firefighters and officers from Kingston, Ealing, Acton, Park Royal and Heston attended the scene.

Fire investigators are now looking into what caused the blaze.
