Something fishy has emerged on Feltham High Street as authorities struggle to understand why 300 Roach have perished in the nearby pond.
The Environment Agency has taken samples of dead fish and water from the pool, which sits in The Green in central Feltham, and are hoping to establish the cause of yesterday's sudden deaths.
Rumour quickly spread that young vandals had caused the disaster by tossing paint into the pond. But Environment Agency officials confirmed they are testing the water for blue-green algae, which may have flourished in the area, depriving other wildlife of oxygen.
The council have now cordoned off the area and are waiting for the test results before taking further action. It is not clear whether any other animals have been affected.
Local mum-of-two Susan Smith said: "It's heart-breaking. I normally take my kids down their every day but now absolutely all the fish are gone."
