A FAULTY hospital ventilator accelerated the death of a student from Cranford, a court heard this week.

However, a single blow from professional boxer Clifton Ty Mitchell may have been enough to kill Jagdip Randhawa anyway.

Leeds University student Mr Randhawa died on October 17 last year, five days after allegedly being knocked unconscious by Mitchell during a night out in Leeds city centre.

Home Office pathologist Dr Philip Lumb said the 19-year-old was admitted to Leeds General Infirmary with a fractured skull and brain injuries. He told jurors the machine used to ventilate Mr Randhawa had ‘malfunctioned’, leaving him short of oxygen for about 45 minutes.

“The effects of this head injury were exacerbated by the complications that had ensued from the necessary medical treatment,” he said.

Mitchell, of Broadway Park Close, Derby, denies murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The trial continues.
