THE GLAMOUR of a fashion catwalk transformed the streets of Portobello and Golborne Road Markets on the weekend as Flash Fashion 2013 came to town.
Onlookers were delighted and inspired by the a series of Flash Fashion shows portraying four very distinctive looks; `Parisian Chic', `Denim Grunge', `Call of the Wild' and `Scottish Heritage', were staged on the North Kensington streets on Saturday September 7.
Model sashayed down a 400m catwalk from Tavistock Road to Colville Terrace for the Flash Fashion finale. Designers like Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood use the markets as a source of inspiration, and Peter Simon (founder of Monsoon) started his retail career trading on the market.
This is the third Flash Fashion commission by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and the Portobello and Golborne Management Committee. The event is part of an ongoing campaign to promote the diversity and creativity of the markets. It is produced by volunteers whose enthusiasm for the local markets and community are the heart and soul of the Flash Fashion ethos.
There was also an exhibition of the `Portobello & Golborne LOOK Photo Challenge' finalists in Portobello Square where shoppers and visitors voted for their favourite photograph.
Markets Officer Mark Atkinson said: "Each year we seem to be reaching different and new audiences. This year fashion magazine Elle UK did a six page Portobello street fashion feature and so this year we have had a large number of fashion bloggers attending the event. We hope to make more of this each year as the event gets more notoriety. It really was a fantastic day."
Cllr Tim Ahern, the Royal Borough's Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "I want to congratulate all our budding designers for the eclectic looks they have put together using the markets as their inspiration".
