A loving husband, father, and friend to the people of Feltham has died, taking a part of the borough with him.

Harry Irwin, 90, of Shaftesbury Avenue, Feltham, who had been living with a heart condition for the past few years, all of a sudden became very weak, and sadly died on November 12.

The father-of-two was a devoted member of the Feltham Salvation Army and would always be seen out on the High Street, come rain or shine, collecting donations dressed in his uniform.

Speaking to The Chronicle, widowed wife, Iris Irwin, 81, who has always lived in Feltham and married the love of her life 53 years ago after meeting him at the Salvation Army, said: "He was a great husband and a great father.

"His family were always his first importance.

"The best memory we (the family) have is his concern for other people - taking people to the hospital and bringing them to church.

"He was always doing something for someone."

The close-knit family is made up their two grown up children, son Robert, aged 50, and daughter Caroline, aged 46, who were also raised in Feltham.

Daughter Caroline said: "He was the most generous and selfless man that you could ever meet.

"He was kind, practical, always willing to help - truly a Christian gentleman.

"He will be greatly missed."

Harry had moved over from Northern Ireland, to Feltham, when he was just 11-years-old and lived in the same house all his life.

He joined the Salvation Army in Bedfont Lane some 55 years ago where he met wife, Iris, and spent every Friday night with friends down the pub in Feltham or Ashford.

His name has also appeared on a plaque at The Centre after he was named as the Feltham Citizen of the Year award in 2011.

Eddie Menday said: "He was a well known character in Feltham and as a member of the Salvation Army most people will remember him in uniform collecting for them in the High Street.

"I have known him for many years as his younger brother was a friend of mine, who lost his life in an air accident in Canada while serving in the RAF.

"Harry was a gentle man in every respect and Feltham is the poorer in his passing."

He leaves a wife and two grown up children.

The funeral will be held at the Southville Methodist Church on Bedfont Lane (corner of Tachbrook Road) at 1pm on Wednesday, December 3.

Refreshments will be served at the Feltham Salvation Army hall.

Family flowers only.

Donations to Salvation Army.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
