Part of a crane fell on to a building site in Northwood yesterday, smashing into a building, according to one source.

The source said a family had to be evacuated from their home when the tip of the job hit the building, close to the site where the former Reindeer pub stood and where Essex company Clarke Design and Build is constructing 12, three- and four-storey flats.

Police say nobody was hurt in the incident which happened shortly after 4pm.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and has confirmed it will hold an investigation. One of its inspectors is on site today (Friday).

Jean McFarlane, who lives in Murray Road nearby and sent in the picture, top, said her partner told her what had happened when he returned from the library at about 6pm.

“He said: ‘You are not going to believe this’,” she said.

It is unclear so far exactly where the section of crane came down but London Ambulance Service confirmed nobody had been injured.

Ross Bailey, who works in the Complete Golfer shop next door to the construction site, said: "We didn't hear or see anything but the first we knew of it was when a customer came into the shop and said a crane has just come down next door.

"Then we saw the police turn up and went out to have a look. Part of the the crane was hanging down and had fallen on the building next door.

"They have blocked the area off now so we can't see anything at the moment."
