NEW 'flat-pack' homes that can change in layout and are built within weeks in factories before being winched into place look set to arrive on a Brook Green housing estate.

Twelve of the low-rise, high-density properties are to spring up on the Spring Vale Estate in Masbro Road in a pilot scheme which is being tipped as a blueprint to ease the capital's housing crisis.

If the scheme, which is set to be approved next month, is successful, a further 100 of the properties could spring up at sites around the borough.

Taking less than two weeks to construct, the homes give provision for the shape and size of rooms to be changed to allow for changing family structures and ages.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council says the new-age homes fit into tight, ‘unused’ spaces and do not impinge on existing estate residents, who will be consulted on the scheme soon.

Head of housing Andrew Johnson said: “This is an innovative way to provide quality homes, fit for modern living at affordable costs. Hammersmith and Fulham is one of the most densely populated boroughs in the country but there is a distinct lack of housing for the middle market.

“This scheme will lead to the construction of exemplary family homes that can also fit into tight urban spaces and is perfect for a congested city like London.”
