HILLINGDON Police has issued the following briefing note advising residents that there will be an increased police presence this weekend, relating to the London riots, and the anniversary of 9/11.

Inspector Nick Aldworth said: "Since the wide-spread disorder of 8 August, Hillingdon has remained a peaceful and safe borough and we have been able to sustain a business-as-usual approach despite heavy demands on our staff. The Metropolitan Police Service has successfully dealt with a number of tension-points and officers and staff from Hillingdon have contributed to all of these operations.

"This weekend see’s the funeral of Mark Duggan in Tottenham. In line with the family’s wishes, the policing in Tottenham will reflect the family’s desire for a local, peaceful and dignified funeral.

"Recognising the potential tensions associated with this event, and the imminent 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, senior MPS leaders have met with community and business representatives and listened to their concerns. Reassurance will continue to be provided by a very visible presence across the whole of London and Hillingdon residents may see high numbers of officers on our streets. Despite this presence, we are not anticipating any associated incidents on this borough.

"As an immensely challenging time for our staff comes to a close, we extend our thanks to the whole of the community for their overwhelming support. Public expressions of gratitude for a job well done, have been motivating for our staff, all of whom have been working long hours in difficult circumstances. In return, we are enormously proud of this community for their complete rejection of violence and criminality during this time and congratulate our partners and voluntary sector workers for the role they have played in keeping Hillingdon safe."
