THE names of ex-pupils who fought and died in the two world wars have been immortalised after their first memorial was destroyed by fire.

A dedication service was held for the new plaque at Ealing and West London College last Friday.

The Ealing Green site used to be the Ealing County School for Boys, which later became Ealing Grammar School for Boys.

The service was led by the Very Reverend Dr John Moses KCVO, former pupil and dean emeritus of St Paul's Cathedral, and attended by Mayor of Ealing Barbara Yerolemou, Ealing North MP Steve Pound, representatives from the college and 40 ex-students.

The original plaque was installed in 1950 by Dr Sainsbury Hicks, the head-teacher at the time, after he raised £2,000 to pay for it.

It was burned along with a large section of the old school in 2002.

The replacement was organised by Donald Robertson, chair of the Old Ealonians, which is made up of former pupils. The 81-year-old found names of the fallen thanks to the old boys' memories and by researching old newspapers.

He said: "It was a solemn but great occasion. I think it is vital they are remembered for posterity by this plaque.

"Without it, people might never know what happened to them."
