A NEW £4m lab designed to help detect and treat viruses and parasites in three leading hospitals was unveiled this month.

Professor Brian Duerden, inspector of microbiology and infection control for the Department for Health, officially opened the new lab on Friday, September 10.

The state-of-the-art microbiology lab, the first in Europe, will be housed in Charing Cross Hospital but will also serve St Mary's and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals.

It will help study micro-organisms, including bacteria, and help control and limit levels of infection in the hospitals.

Alan Howard, pathology programme director at Charing Cross, said: "The broad principle of centralising the laboratories at one hospital site is to avoid duplication and make sure we are more efficient and are not over capacity."

Among the new technology in the lab will be the Infinity 48 system which can detect MRSA, swine flu and C. difficile and tuberculosis early.
