A SCHOOL in Wembley has been awarded a national environment award which was presented to pupils at London Zoo.

Unusually, Preston Park Primary School, in College Road, has its own farm and children have to apply to look after the animals.

This involves letter writing and an interview process before the lucky ones are chosen.

The school believes it improves their attainment because there is the goal of looking after the animals at the end.

The TOTAL Green School Awards is a nationwide competition for five to 11-year-olds run by the Young People's Trust for the Environment and awarded the Brent school for its clever initiative.

Ten pupils picked up the award from actress Zoe Wanamaker who stars in the Harry Potter films, at London Zoo, last Thursday (June 16).

Penney French, teaching assistant at Preston Park, said: "The children are over the moon to have won this. We had an unforgettable day."

The competition aims to generate interest in the environment and raise awareness about the need for sustainable energy sources.
