EASTENDERS actor Marc Elliot heralded the arrival of the festive period by turning on the Christmas tree lights in Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre on Thursday.

The soap star, who plays Syed Masood, donated part of his appearance fee to Ealing Mencap, the centres charity of the year.

After pressing the plunger he stayed to give autographs and pose for photos.

About 300 shoppers enjoyed entertainment laid on by the Ealing Street Dance Academy and Questors Theatre. And three special Christmas lights designed by children in a competition earlier this year were also unveiled.

Stuart Hill, Centre Manager of Ealing Broadway, said: We're thrilled with the turn out for the lights switch-on. It was a real pleasure to welcome Marc to the centre and to give up and coming stars the chance to perform. I hope everyone enjoyed the evening.

On Saturday (3) two Christmas trees with a difference will appear in the shopping centre.

We do not want to give too much away but the lively trees just might have a mind of their own.
