A councillor is cycling 100km in memory of his mother, ‘a truly amazing woman who made a positive difference to the lives of many’.

Ealing Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport and Northolt West End councillor Bassam Mahfouz is completing his challenge through the hilly Chilterns on Sunday (October 5).

Enaam Mahfouz died 10 years ago this November after battling with pancreatic cancer, so funds raised by her son's Justgving page will go to Pancreatic Cancer UK.

The councillor said his mother had a passion for living a full life in her 58 years, that she was a truly amazing woman and the hardest working person he has ever met.

He said: “They say the brightest candle burns the fastest and in my mother’s case our worlds have been made all the better for having had her shine through it.

“She showed what you can achieve with love, determination and good humour. She was the greatest mum any person could have ever asked for, we miss her dearly.

“She loved supporting young people and had a real entrepreneurial spirit which saw her open her own Arabic Saturday school called The Future School in Northolt .

“A fun, positive, passionate woman who worked tirelessly and always stayed ahead of the game when it came to the latest technology.”

Mr Mahfouz said his mum loved being outside in nature, hence him choosing to mark the 10 year anniversary of her death with an activity in the great outdoors.

He said during his first training ride he cycled past the hospital where she was diagnosed and then the hospital where, nine months later, she spent her final days.

He added: “Pancreatic cancer is the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the UK but the amount spent on pancreatic cancer research accounts for only one per cent of the total cancer research spend.

“Donate a few quid so someone else’s mother/sister/daughter can live to enjoy the future they had hoped and dreamed of having.”
