The Duchess of Cornwall's son, Tom Parker Bowles, was one of many Bayswater residents to be evacuated as fire caused extensive damage to a mansion block on Moscow Road on Saturday.

Sixty firefighters and 12 fire engines were called to the scene on the corner of Moscow Road and Palace Court at 1.20am.

Dave Robinson, London Fire Brigade station manager, said on Saturday: "Crews have been working throughout the night in challenging conditions to get this fire under control and to stop it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

"The house affected by the fire is a large property which is currently under refurbishment. No-one is believed to have been living there and thankfully we've had no reports of any injuries."

The cause of the blaze, which affected all five floors of the multi-million pound home plus the basement and roof, is not yet known.

Donna de Palmer, who lives in a neighbouring house in Ossington Street, was one of many nearby residents to be evacuated in the early hours.

"We were woken at about 2am by the fire brigade and had to leave our house because at the time the fire was raging," she said. "They were concerned it was going to spread.

"We were lucky because we were asleep on the third floor so we couldn't hear the firemen banging on our front door. Our neighbour could hear our dogs barking and told the firemen 'if the dogs are barking then they are in the house.'

"So the firemen kept banging on the door until we woke up. My husband, mother-in-law and I went to the Hyde Park Hotel just down the road and spent the rest of the night there."

Ms de Palmer commended the fire brigade for their quick action. She said: "They were awesome. They took all the necessary steps. It is heartbreaking after watching the building being refurbished over the last two years to see it go up in flames."

Another nearby resident who had to leave his home as a precaution was Tom Parker Bowles, the son of the Duchess of Cornwall.

Mr Parker Bowles, 38, took to Twitter to praise the emergency services. He said: "Raging fire just broken out. All of us evacuated. Police, neighbours and fire brigade magnificent."

Alex Fazakes, who works at the Hill Cafe next door to the mansion block on Moscow Road said the cafe was unable to do business on Saturday because of the fire.

"I came into work in the morning and the whole road was closed off. I could see a lot of smoke coming from the building. We had to wait until Sunday to open the shop again."
