Elderly people took the first step in fighting against dementia, isolation and loneliness at the first Memory Cafe in Hounslow.

Organised by Bluebird Care, dozens of pensioners turned up to the launch meeting where they made new friends over a cup of tea and nibbles and joined in reminiscence based activities.

More than 40 people were at the first session which was launched last Friday (5).

In a bid to raise awareness of the issues and help people, Sai Visakan, managing director of Bluebird Care in Hounslow, started the Memory Cafe sessions, creating a social hub where people can get to know each other and seek advice and information from specialists, whether for personal welfare or for a loved one.

He claims o ne in four people will be affected by dementia in their lifetimes.

Mr Visakan added: "A recent parliamentary report made recommendations to the government about the need to continue to raise awareness of dementia and the work that can be done to make our communities more dementia friendly.

With the specialist services we provide at Bluebird Care we are determined to do just that.

“All of our community events this year will focus on bringing older people together to unwind over a relaxing free morning cuppa.”

The next Bluebird Care Hounslow memory cafe is on Friday, October 3, from 10am to midday, at the Paul Robeson Centre, Hounslow, in celebration of national Older People’s Day.
