As an 82-year-old member of the Harrow police and community consultative group and drugs officer of the Harrow crime prevention panel, I am writing to say that I am sick and tired of being told about safer Harrow by the local police and Harrow Council when it is patently untrue.

On Friday, January 16, I heard of the death of an 81-year-old woman who was attacked in Harrow last Thursday night at 8pm on her way to an educational meeting.

How can Harrow be described as safe? Criminals are roaming the streets committing crimes of violence and whenever they occur the police always say the same things, ie "this is not typical" or "this is an exceptional event in the borough".

In the recent past we have had stabbings, muggings and rapes in Pinner and I for one am afraid to go out at night.

The police are not catching the drug dealers and users, although there must be thousands of users in the borough.

Why do they think these crimes are being committed if it is not to feed an illegal drug habit?

If only the police could bring themselves to tell us the truth, rather than hiding behind a barrage of false statistics, Harrow might indeed become safer.
