He may be a springer-spaniel cross but in the best tradition of the British bulldog, Buddy's bid for TV stardom ended in penalty misery.

Buddy and his owner Andrew Brownlie, of Elizabeth Way, Hanworth , were knocked out at the semi-final stage of Channel 4 show Superstar Dogs, screened on Friday.

It was the penalty-taking contest which really let the duo down, with the pooch failing to net a single goal.

The 19-month-old canine, who had never entered a dog show before and was the youngest competitor on the programme, met his match in the experienced Zebedee and search and rescue dog Rex.

But Mr Brownlie said he was incredibly proud and would definitely be entering Buddy in more agility contests in future.

"To do so well at his first attempt, having never seen an agility course before, was amazing," he said.

"He loved it and I've been bitten by the bug so we'll definitely be entering more contests together in future."
