WITNESSES to a distressing distraction burglary on an elderly woman in Brent are being sought by local police.

Anappeal has gone out this week to encourage anyone who might have seen the crime, which happened on December 4 at Hardinge Road, to contact police.

At around 8pm, a 91-year-old lady opened her door to a man who claimed to be a police officer.

Hesaid one of her neighbours had money stolen from her, and that he wanted to check her home to make sure that she was keeping her money safe.

The suspect then asked the victim where she keeps her money and she told him, taking him to her bedroom.

Thesuspect then told her he was going to check the money and make sure it was ok. The suspect then made off with the victim’s cash before the she knew what had happened.

Thesuspect is described as a white man, aged between 45 and 50-years-old, with black receding hair. He was wearing a black smart suit, white shirt and black tie.

PoliceConstable Daniela Biagini from Brent Police said: "This is very distressing for an elderly person I urge anyone with any information to contact me on 0208 733 3227 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"Most callers aregenuine, but some aren’t. Burglars won’t go to the trouble of breaking in if they can just knock on the door and be invited in. So always be on your guard when unexpected visitors - men, women or even children - turn up at your door."

Police have warned residents to beware of anyone who says they are in a hurry, and to call a neighbour or friend if in doubt.

People are being encouraged to check to see who is at the door by using your a viewer, or looking through a front window.
