A RECORDING studio near Olympia once used by stars like Tina Turner and Culture Club is set to remain untouched after objections from neighbours.

Nomis Studios in Sinclair Road was a magnet for big music acts in the 1980s to record and rehearse their hits. Originally owned by pop mogul Simon Napier-Bell, the building was also used by Wham, Duran Duran, The Police and Dire Straits, proving popular for its secluded location.

Renamed The Complex when it was brought by the Sanctuary Music Group in the mid-80s, it later reverted to its original name before being turned into offices and becoming vacant in 2008.

It has since been subject of several failed planning applications, the latest of which is set to be rejected Hammersmith and Fulham Council at a meeting next Wednesday on the advice of planning officers.

The authority has received more than 40 letters of complaint by neighbours angry at plans to demolish most of the building and turn it into 52 flats with 41 parking spaces.

Led by the Sinclair, Milson and Hofland Roads' Residents' Association, which called the scheme 'overbearing', 'inappropriate', and 'unsympathetic', neighbours also received support from Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter and borough mayor Belina Donovan.

The Friends' of Brook Green, while having concerns over density, were more receptive to the development, saying it would meet housing demand in the area.

Regal Homes, the applicant, proposed to demolish numbers 45-51 and build a mix of studio, one, two and three-bedroom flats in a part three-storey, part five-storey building, while retaining number 53 and a historic arch.

But the scheme was rejected on grounds it would have been over-developed, too tall, offered no affordable housing, was too cramped and would have compromised residents' privacy.

It was also deemed insufficiently different to a previous application, appealed last year, which encompassed 54 flats. The only other main alteration was the removal of roof terraces and balconies.

Previously, in 2009, an application for 164 student flats on the site was rejected.
