A THIRD developer is trying its luck to transform the Carpet Right store in Goldhawk Road into flats and shops.

Linden Homes is consulting residents on early plans to replace the single-level warehouse with 43 homes in seven, five and four-storey blocks with space for new shops underneath.

The housing developer, which acquired the shop at the junction with Paddenswick Road, Shepherd’s Bush earlier this year, is the latest to attempt to get plans rubberstamped.

Bexwell Properties’ idea for 50 flats in a 10-storey block above a car showroom was rejected by Hammersmith and Fulham Council in 2005 and lost an apeal in October 2006.  Slightly smaller plans from Network Housing, of a six-storey building with 46 flats, was met with opposition from residents and finally withdrawn in 2008.

Cathnor Park Area Action Group argues the seven storeys is still too high and will dominate the locally listed King’s Parade in Askew Road.

Annabel Clarke, chairwoman of the residents association, believes a single elegant building in Goldhawk Road would be ideal.

She added: “We are disappointed with this proposal. We know that the architects Collado Collins can do better as is demonstrated by their beautiful building designs for the former Citreon/Access storage building in Shepherd’s Bush Road and their stunning refurbishment of the Olympia Halls.

“Amenity space has been sacrificed in order to provide car parking. Greenside Road is already used as a rat run and becomes gridlocked on QPR match days and on Sundays when the very popular Church of St Andrej de Bobola with a congregation of over 4,000 holds six masses.”

Linden Homes has welcomed feedback from residents following a public meeting earlier this month.

Ben Johnson, senior planning manager, said: “Both Linden Homes and partner Wates Developments value feedback and participation. We have a strong commitment to working closely with local communities in the areas in which we operate. We will now be reviewing all the feedback we receive and will look to incorporate this into our evolving plans, where possible and appropriate.”

* Architects will discuss the plans again at the residents association’s AGM at Greenside School on June 11 at 7.30pm.
