TESCO has restated its commitment to building a huge store beside Hounslow bus garage, with demolition work set to start soon.

The retail giant won planning permission back in September 2011 for a 2.1 acre supermarket at the London Road site and said at the time work would begin the following year.

But with Tesco announcing last month it was scrapping plans for 100 new stores across the country, concern was growing the project had fallen by the wayside.

The council's latest master plan, outlining proposals for the regeneration of Hounslow town centre over the next eight years, even includes a contingency plan should the development not go ahead.

However, a Tesco spokeswoman this week said the project remained on track and demolition work was set to begin shortly.

"We are in the final stages of preparing the site for demolition. We will make sure we update the community as we progress," she added.

The empty Hounslow House office block and the Black Arrow offices and warehouse will be demolished to make way for the new supermarket.

When complete, the new building will be five-storeys tall and will include a row of smaller shops on the ground floor and a 287-space car park for use by all town centre shoppers.
