The horrors of the First World War must seem a long way off when you are enjoying a refreshing drink with the Prime Minister in a corner of the garden at ‘Number 10’.
But Abbostfield School pupils Jasaron Bajwa and Shane Grant were there because they had been chosen to lead the way back to the trenches in this, the centenary year of the outbreak of the war.
The pair are part of a pilot scheme funded by the Government to send pupils from schools all over the country on ‘trenches trips’ in the next two years, to learn about the conflict on the Western Front. They were accompanied by teacher Mark Buckingham from the school in Clifton Gardens, Hillingdon.
They met David Cameron at a reception in Downing Street this week as he announced a £5m fund to conserve and protect the nation’s war memorials.
Among schemes funded by the grant will be a website developed by the Imperial War Museum to supply information about memorials and their location.
