A YOUNG man who launched his own dance group at the age of 16 has been nominated eight times for inspiring youngsters and keeping them out of trouble.

Torron-Lee Dewar has been praised for sharing his skills with young people and keeping them away from crime and self-harming.

Torron-Lee, who runs the Alliance Dance Unit at the Watermans Centre, said: “I never thought it would work out like this, but boys who come along realise it’s cool.

“It helps to keep them off the street and from what people have told me they have stopped self-harming and don’t do stupid things any more.”

One nominator, Ken Lawrance, said: “Where do I start? With his amazing talent that he shares, volunteering his time and skills to better his community, making positive people within his dance unit.

“He has helped people overcome their fears and also one young lady in particular was self-harming and Torron has guided her away from this, and now she is performing in his next show.

“I wish there were more people like Torron. The world would be a better place.”

Toni Miles said: “Torron-Lee teaches my son and through his teaching and guidance, my son has grown in confidence and ability.

“He inspires his students to reach for the stars and work hard to follow their dreams.

“He is a great example of how one person can make a big change.”

Debbie Dewar added: “The ethos of his project is to get people of all ages off the streets and teach them a skill, giving them something to look forward to, keeping them away from gun and knife crime and giving them a sense of belonging and confidence.”
