1. LAVENDER: Once flowers have faded give the plant a haircut, removing old flowers and straggly stems. N.B. Do not cut back into old wood.

2. HARVEST: Onions, shallots, runner beans (when six inches to eight inches long or 15-20cm), French beans, peas and broad beans.

3. DEAD-HEADING: Carry on dead-heading for more flowers. If you want the seeds of your favourite flowers then leave; when dead-heading fuchsias do not forget the pod behind the flowers.

4. SUN-FLOWERS: Tie to canes as they get taller and taller. This will strengthen the main stem.

5. WINTER VEGETABLES: Plant out broccoli, leeks, brussel sprouts and cauliflowers for winter vegetables.

6. SWEET PEAS: Cut flowers everyday. The best time is in the morning. Put in a vase of water and place them where you can enjoy their fragrance.

TIP OF THE WEEK

HOLIDAYS: If you do not have someone to water your plants while you are away on holiday then you should follow these guidelines:-

? Find a shady spot.

? Group all containers together including hanging baskets.

? Soak plants on the day you leave ensuring that the water can be seen coming out of the bottom of the container.

? Terracotta saucers under pots will hold any water escaping from your pots.

? Enjoy your holiday.
