A former homeless man has set up charity Dad's House in Kensington to support lone fathers with sport and cookery.

Homeless in Earl's Court while looking after his vulnerable one-year-old son, Billy McGranaghan's life hit rock bottom two decades ago.

But 18 years later, and now a successful 45-year-old businessman living in Kensington Square, the loving dad wants to make sure others who are struggling can get help.

Speaking of his experience, he said: "It was a nightmare. We were homeless and didn't have any money. I didn't know where to go and who to talk to. I was terrified. It is something I'll never forget."

Slowly but surely, after finding a temporary home in a bed and breakfast in Courtfield Gardens, Mr McGranaghan was able to turn his life around. He set up removal firm in Holland Park and has now provided a good life for son Sam, who is now 19.

But at the back of his mind he had to help others.

For three years he worked around 15 hours a day to set up Dad's House. It runs cookery classes and football tournaments for single dads. It hopes in the future to set up residential accommodation for fathers - a first in the charity sector - and has created a music single to raise awarness about what they do.

"I'm so proud of myself," said Mr McGranagan. "Having a dad around is on of the most important thing in a child's life. It holds them in stead for the future. Life is not perfect, and dads should be involved as much as they can, especially in projects families can do together."

Charities Dad's House and Solidarity Sports offers free five-a-side football games in the Royal Borough. Sessions take place every Friday at Westway Sports Centre, starting tomorrow from 9pm to 10pm. More sessions will start on April 6, at St Luke's, Chelsea, from 7pm to 8pm. For more information or to book a place call 07958 599 922 or visit www.dadshouse.co.uk
