Angry dog owners have demanded fines be slapped on antisocial cyclists after a much-loved Bayswater pet was killed in Kensington Gardens.

Sparks flew at a meet the management event held in Hyde Park when members of Royal Parks Dog Walkers' Association called on staff to penalise cyclists using pedestrian footpaths.

The move came after a mongrel called Missy was found dying in Kensington Gardens last month. Vets said the most likely cause of death was that the pooch was hit by a bike.

Missy's owner Marisa Knightley (pictured), of Fulton Mews, Bayswater, said: "My entire family is utterly heartbroken at losing Missy. Sadly, I think it's going to take an accident involving a child for anything to be done about this.

"Missy was such a special dog, she was like my shadow. Before this happened, I thought cyclists could co-exist in the park with dog walkers, but now I'm not so sure."

Ms Knightley would also like speed bumps to be installed in cycle lanes in the Royal Parks - including Green Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park and St James's Park -  to encourage cyclists to slow down.

Secretary of the RPDWA Angela Fried, of Victoria Grove Mews, Notting Hill, added: "We're not anti-cycling, we're against antisocial cycling. We've been fighting for 20 years to get something done."

Royal Parks chief executive Mark Camley said he was trying to change current law, which does not allow fixed penalty notices to be issued in Royal Parks and aims to set a up a considerate cycling campaign, to make sure cyclists consider other park users when visiting the park.
