Hundreds of Hounslow worshippers are celebrating after a controversial mosque won the right to remain open.

The owners of the former Royal British Legion Club in Park Lane, Cranford, were given a six-month stay of execution earlier this year after illegally converting it into a place of worship.

And religious leaders convinced councillors at Monday night's Sustainable Development Committee meeting that they had done enough to solve traffic problems which have plagued the site.

About 300 Muslims attend the temple's busiest prayer sessions on Friday afternoons and neighbouring residents had complained about heavy traffic and potentially dangerous parking in surrounding streets.

But planning consultant Mark Pender, speaking on behalf of the mosque's trustees, who bought the building in 2005, insisted they had worked hard to improve transport to and from the site by adding parking and cycling spaces, marshalling and a shuttle bus.

He said: "The next nearest mosque is more than two miles away in Wellington Road South, Hounslow, and there are more than 300 worshippers living within 800 yards of this site."
