AN ELDERLY couple have died after a smash at the Polish War Memorial on the A40 when their car was involved with a collision with a lorry.

The fatal smash took place at approximately 11.50pm on Thursday (15) with a white Mercedes 190E car and a lorry on the eastbound carriageway of the A40, near the Polish War Memorial at the border of Ruislip and Northolt.

It is believed the Mercedes, containing a man and a woman, had broken down on the eastbound carriageway. While awaiting recovery the vehicle was in collision with a lorry that was travelling on the same carriageway.

London Ambulance Service attended and the two occupants of the Mercedes - a man aged 80 years and his 76 year old wife - were pronounced dead at the scene.

As yet they have not been named by the police, although a post-mortem is expected to take place today (Monday).

Sergeant Cheryl Frost from the Collision Investigation Unit based at Alperton Traffic Garage is asking anyone who can assist to call the witness appeal line on 020 8998 5319.

A man, the driver of the lorry, was arrested at the scene and later bailed to return in July, pending further inquiries.
