A councillor and former detective has denied indecently assaulting a boy in custody.

Gurpal Virdi appeared at Southwark Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, October 2) where he also denied misconduct in public office.

The 55-year-old, of Firs Drive, Cranford, was bailed to return for trial on July 27 next year.

The charges relate to an alleged incident in the back of a police van in 1986, when Mr Virdi was a police constable.

The Cranford ward councillor retired from the Metropolitan Police in 2012 and was elected to Hounslow Council in May. He has been suspended by Labour pending the outcome of the court case.

His lawyers had applied unsuccessfully to have the charges against him dismissed.
