A councillor was back in court today accused of indecently assaulting a boy in 1986 when he was a police officer.

Gurpal Virdi, of Firs Drive, Cranford, appeared at Southwark Crown Court this morning charged with indecently assaulting a boy aged under 16.

The 55-year-old former detective, who also faces a charge of misconduct in public office, was bailed to return on August 28, when he is due to enter his plea.

Mr Virdi, who retired from the Met Police after 30 years in 2012, was last month elected as a Labour councillor for Cranford. He has been suspended by the party pending the outcome of the court case.
