Help was at hand for the elderly and vulnerable in Harrow suffering from the storms that have hit the UK.

Free blankets, slippers and home insulation were provided by Harrow Council to 450 older people, either through a phonecall from a dedicated helpline or a visit to their home through the authority's Winter Warmers Scheme which they have set £50,000 aside for.

Minnie Glass, 97, received a free blanket and slippers under the scheme, which are helping her see out the harsh weather.

She said: “I have not had slippers before, and am really pleased with them, they are lovely and warm.”

Households have also been offered advice on keeping fuel costs down throughout the winter.

Harrow Council's cabinet member for health and wellbeing Councillor Simon Williams (Conservative) said: ”The winter weather, including the storms we are seeing at the moment, can make many people feel isolated and lonely.

"It is really important that we can offer some help to those who may be particularly at risk, such as the older vulnerable resident."
