I READ the latest copy of HM magazine and could scarcely believe the lead article from Peter Thompson, the head of Hounslow Council.

The topic seems to be not raging unemployment, the effect of staff being asked to take a voluntary redundancy package, not having schools closed in bad weather or local businesses closing down, but the need for more... trees.

Yes, it seems the duly-elected council leader wants us to think more about trees and their effect on the local environment.

I suspect this is more of a gesture of support for Boris Johnson, who plans to roll out a programme of tree planting in a number of boroughs, and our local leader sees this as his opportunity.

Well, Mr Thompson, there are really much more serious issues affecting us all and if you want to act like a comedian - as you seem to have a passing resemblance to Harry Hill in your photo, you're going the right way about it.

It is a case of the familiar tune, 'I talk to the trees, but they don't listen to me...'
