3,000 tonnes of grit is being stockpiled by Hillingdon Council to cope with freezing temperatures this Winter.

As the mercury continues to drop, the local authority are on standby for any sudden change in conditions over the coming weeks.

Whenever ice or snow is predicted, the council insist they will be ready to snap into action.

Councillor Keith Burrows, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: "We have a good stock of salt in place to help to keep the borough’s roads and pavements safe this winter.

"We also have a number of hard-working teams of gritters ready to tackle any bad weather to make travelling across the borough easier for residents."

The council receives Met Office weather reports to enable crews to prioritise their gritting routes and target the known blackspots, such as Harvil Road, Harefield, where a car somersaulted into a field in icy weather this January.

On average and dependant on the weather, each gritter spreads approximately four tonnes of salt on their designated route.

Over 1,000 tonnes of grit are already at council storage depots, and a further 2,000 has been ordered and is expected to arrive within the coming weeks.

Last year less than 3,000 tonnes was used, so the council anticipate being in good shape for the Winter ahead.
