One cat who is all too familiar with the inside of an operating theatre is Lavender.

She arrived at The Mayhew Animal Home after her owner had no time for her.

At some time in the past, she’s had her back right leg removed but she manages well and is a fast mover.

Lavender is friendly and affectionate. She loves company and cuddling up to you.

She has a flea allergy which is controlled with regular flea treatments.

If you would like to home this gorgeous girl (and her teddy bear!), she is currently in foster care with The Mayhew, see themayhew.org or call 020 8962 8000.

Do you know anyone who wants to work with animals? If so, The Mayhew Animal Home’s Open Day provides a unique opportunity to have a close look at what working in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic would be like.

As well as meeting animals needing homes, for this one day of the year, you can also look round clinical areas of The Mayhew - not normally open to the public, such as the operating theatre and recovery areas.

Visitors will have the opportunity to examine x-rays, use the ultrasound probe, look down a microscope and suture a toy bear.

You will also be able to meet The Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers and Vet Clinic Team.

Last year, I went with an 11-year-old who came away wanting to be a vet - although he’s now reverted to wanting to be a footballer. (And, don’t forget, you can always have a career change as an adult).

As well as touring the home, you will also be able to soak up the carnival atmosphere in the road outside where there will be a steel band, bouncy castle, face painting, fun photo booth and stalls with home-made cakes, jams and treats. The Open Day takes place on Sunday June 14 12noon–5pm at Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green, NW10 6BJ.
