Meet Gordon, a gorgeous two-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier looking for a new home.

Gordon is busy learning sign language – he’s quickly picking up commands by looking at body language, hand signals and reading faces.

This friendly dog is completely deaf. Found abandoned, as a stray, in London, The Mayhew Animal Home is teaching him sign language while he waits for a new home.

He’s eager to learn and is lapping up all his lessons.

A new owner must be prepared to continue this training in his new home. If you are prepared for the commitment as well as the rewards of homing Gordon, go online or call 020 8962 8000.

Animal Bazaar

The Mayhew is having a bumper stall at this year’s Ealing Animal Welfare Bazaar. The Bazaar is an amazing opportunity for people to meet those involved in the work of over 30 animal welfare charities in this country and abroad as well as buying lots of bargains and having an enjoyable day out. For the first time, this year, societies will also be giving talks about their work. The Bazaar takes place on March 7 (10.30am-4pm) at Hanwell Methodist Church, Church Rd, W7 1DJ. Details online.

Also having a stall, will be Four Paws. It’s a good job someone has their finger on the pulse of proposed EU legislation and, in this case, it’s Four Paws. They’ve recently launched a campaign against the European Commission’s plans contained within the Animal Health Law to classify stray domestic animals such as cats and dogs as 'wild animals'. This would give these animals lower legal protection than 'kept, companion animals' and could, in some situations, offer legal grounds for allowing hunters to shoot them. Entitled 'Wild? Me?', their campaign emphasises that stray animals (like Gordon) are not wild animals and asks for an improved definition of stray animals. To find out how to support their campaign, go online.
