MONTHLY collection rates of bulky rubbish like mattresses, sofas and fridges have dropped by tens of thousands within three years.

The figures show that in 2006 there were 27,544 collections of bulky items compared with just 5,358 so far this year.

People blame the £25 charge to pick up five items and believe this is leading to more fly-tipping in Brent.

The figures were released in a letter from Councillor Irwin Van Colle (Lib Dem).

Councillor James Powney, Labour spokesman, welcomed Mr Van Colle's honesty and says he believes the decline is down to the £25 charge.

He said: "I am grateful to Councillor Van Colle for admitting that the number of special collections has fallen as a result of the introduction of the charge.

"That is what I have been saying all along. Now perhaps he will change the policy he admits has failed."

Brent's current waste disposal bill is in the region of £10 million per year which is paid for by tax payers.

The collection service is free for those who can't afford to pay the cost.

The Liberal Democrat led council believes there is no direct link between the charge and numbers of fly-tipping. In fact they say fly-tipping in the borough has dropped by 65 per cent in the past three years.
