Plans are to be consulted on this weekend to remove a Southall landmark.

National Grid has invited the general public to an information session on the former Southall Gasworks site at a drop in session being held on December 10.

The energy company is currently working to dismantle three of the four gasholders on the vacant site to help deliver a new school, shops and thousands of homes to the area.

Plans to dismantle the blue gasholder and relocate its telecoms equipment will be consulted on, with a planning application expected in the coming months.

The now iconic gas holder has been the last obstacle to be removed before the project can get underway being last to have a planning application for its removal submitted by National Grid.

The master plan for the site was approved in 2010.

Nadia Dew, Land Regeneration Manager, National Grid said: “Our work to dismantle the gasholders on the Southall Gasworks site is an important piece of the jigsaw in preparing the site for regeneration, and bringing about significant benefits to Southall. We are excited to be a part of Southall’s transformation.

“The information session is a key way for local residents and those interested in our plans to find out about our works on site. We hope you can make it.”

The drop-in session - which will be held on Wednesday December 10 at the Dominion Centre library 112 The Green, Southall, UB2 4BQ at 2pm to 8pm - will allow attendees to meet with members of the project team and find out more about new proposals to dismantle the large blue MAN holder.

Due to advances in gas storage technology and alternative storage methods, the gasholders on site are no longer required and have been decommissioned for several years.

Planning permission has been granted to dismantle the majority of the gasholders, and preparatory work has begun on site this month.

The next stage of National Grid’s work covers a small area around the large blue MAN holder.

Planning permission is being sought to carry out works on this small part of the site, which will include dismantling the blue MAN holder.
