A WAR veteran collected more than £11,000 for injured servicemen and women thanks to generous Ealing residents and a rousing concert which raised the roof.

On Thursday (Nov 24) Captain Tony Harris, who lost part of his right leg in battle in Afghanistan, received three cheques on behalf of Help the Heroes, the charity which helps those wounded in Britain's conflicts.

The largest amount came after a concert by the Central Band of the RAF at St Barnabas Church in Pitshanger Lane.

They were supported by the Spitfire Kids, a choir of four to 11-year-olds who, like the band, are based at RAF Northolt.

As well as ticket sales, money was raised through sponsorship, a charity auction and a raffle at the event in October. It was organised by the Greenford, Hanwell and Northfields and Ealing Rotary clubs.

A further £800 was raised by council staff with a tombola at Perceval House and £100 more from collections after a remembrance service at St Mary's Church in Perivale on November 12.

The cheques were presented at the Bridge Hotel in the Western Avenue, Greenford.

Hazel Ware, vice president of Greenford Rotary and the main organiser of the concert and the tombola, said: "Everyone was totally amazed by the final figure. It was beyond my wildest dreams we would raise so much.

"And I'm so grateful for the support of the sponsors, without them we couldn't have raised anything like that amount."
