COMMUTERS faced chaos getting to work on Wednesday morning after a lorry hit a level crossing barrier at Barnes station.
A skip lorry hit the barrier in Vine Road at 7.37am, causing delays of up to 40 minutes on South West Trains services between Reading and London Waterloo and Weybridge and London Waterloo via Chertsey.
British Transport Police (BTP) said the driver had not stopped and appealed for witnesses.
A spokesman said: "BTP and Metropolitan Police officers attended the scene to help manage traffic while Network Rail engineers fixed the damaged gates. Initial reports suggest that the lorry struck the barriers before immediately leaving the scene.
"When used responsibly, level crossings are perfectly safe and this incident has resulted in delays to motorists wanting to use the crossing."
The barrier was replaced and the road reopened by 10.30am. As the Informer went to press, a Network Rail spokesman said he expected services to return to normal by midday.
