FURIOUS residents have launched a campaign to prevent an old bar next to a place of worship becoming a venue for stag and hen parties.

Numerous petitions have been launched against the application to convert Caesars, once an ex-servicemen's club, in High Street, Cowley into a venue for late night parties.

The club has been vacant since it closed down last summer, and could be open until 2.30am if the new applicant gets their way.

A licensing meeting will take place on Friday to discuss the application from Umkar Sangoo, of Tudor Way, Hayes.

Hundreds of signatures have been made by devotees at the neighbouring Adhya Shakti Mataji Temple, as well as from the Cowley Community Residents Association.

Several Brunel University students have also signed the petition as well as local councillors Judith Cooper and David Routledge.

Lyn Padden, secretary of the Cowley Community Residents Association, said: "Several of our members are residents of Lodge Close, opposite the club, and they used to suffer terribly.

"Drinkers would return to their cars at two in the morning shouting and would vomit in the middle of the road. There are only two car parking spaces at Caesars.

"For stag and hen nights people nowadays go to Ibiza and Tenerife, not to the Cowley High Road.

"It is simply not wanted. I am sure if people had a good think they would work out a much better way to use that building."

The police have also had a say, and are sceptical ahead of Fridays meeting, that enough has been done to convince them the club will not cause related anti-social behaviour problems.

Licensing Sergeant Ian Meens said: "The premise has been run by a number of different owners and under all has experienced disorder and violence from time to time.

"We have a number of concerns over the proposed times for operation and the types of operation and we don't feel that the application at this time fully represents and supports the four licensing objectives."
