A collapsed sewer was to blame for a sinkhole which opened up in a road in Osterley, Thames Water has said.

The crater measuring 6ft by 4.5ft appeared in Thornbury Road, near the junction with Eversley Crescent last Tuesday (July 29).

A spokesman for Hounslow Council today said Thames Water had confirmed a collapsed sewer more than five metres below the road surface had caused the chasm.

He said the damage was expected to take Thames Water's contractor Cappagh a fortnight to repair, with the work due to be completed by Monday, August 18.

Part of the southbound lane remains closed but traffic is allowed in both directions with the priority given to northbound vehicles.
