You can get fit and help preserve a Hanworth nature haven by working out at a 'Green Gym' this winter.

Volunteers at Pevensey Road Nature Reserve have already created ponds to act as a refuge for fish in the event of another sewage leak like the one which decimated wildlife along the River Crane in 2011.

They unblocked a waterway linking the ponds to the river and built a bridge so visitors could continue to enjoy the beauty spot.

But more work is needed to keep the site looking good and protect its inhabitants by planting, clearing paths and more at the 'Green Gym' every Monday.

The nature reserve, managed in partnership with Hounslow Health and Wellbeing and FORCE (Friends of the River Crane Environment), is one of more than 100 'Green Gyms' across the country run by The Conservation Volunteers.

The environmental charity claims participants can burn a third more calories during one of its volunteering workouts than they would in a conventional gym session. They can also learn about their local environment and pick up traditional woodland skills like coppicing.

The Green Gym at the nature reserve, on the corner of Pevensey and Hanworth roads, meets every Monday from 10.45am-3pm. For more information, click here, email r.hoyes@tcv.org.uk or call Rachel Hoyes on 07787193981.
