ON ONE page of the Ealing Gazette I read of police warnings about the evils of gangs, guns and knives in west London.

Then I turn the page and find myself looking at a group of young Sikh girls in Norwood Green pointing enormous machine guns at the camera and reading that they were "put through their paces following a visit by the British Army".

Well thanks, British Army. That makes me feel really comfortable about the march of civilisation in my home, the Queen of the Suburbs.
