Children are needed to help commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War next month at a ceremony in Brentford.

More than 300 youngsters are being sought by Brentford Royal British Legion (RBL) to lay a cross for every person listed on the town's war memorial who fought in the conflict.

A special service is being held at the memorial, outside Brentford library, in Boston Manor Road, on Sunday, August 10, at 11am.

The ceremony, led by Reverend Derek Simpson, of St Paul's Church, Brentford, will honour all those who lost their lives in the First World War, which Britain entered on August 4, 1914.

Sylvia Nelson, chairman of Brentford RBL, said it had been in touch with schools to recruit children but as the event is during the summer holidays this had proved difficult.

"We have made the crosses and we think it would be nice if we can get a different child to lay each one," she said.

"If anyone knows somebody who died in the First World War and is not listed on the memorial they're also welcome to lay a cross, as I will be doing for my great uncle John Hawes, who lived in Roehampton."

Ms Nelson added that she was keen to hear the stories of troops from the area who fought in the war, so they can be added to a handout being produced for the day.

The ceremony in Brentford is one of many events in the borough commemorating the centenary of the war's outbreak.

On Saturday (July 5) schoolchildren sang war songs and recited poetry during a remembrance event at Feltham library.

On Saturday, August 2, 2014, at 3pm, a new war memorial outside Holy Trinity Church, in Hounslow High Street, will be officially unveiled by military hero Johnson Beharry VC.
