A couple who went from being beach buddies to checkmates have celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Leslie and Diana Lewin have lived in Keswick Gardens, Ruislip, for 35 years, and put the success of their marriage down to affection and patience.

They met while at a holiday club in Christchurch, Dorset, and Mr Lewin, a keen chess player, was able to persuade Diana, a dental nurse, to move down to Ruislip from her home in Manchester.

They are both World War Two veterans, having served in the Royal Artillery and Women's Auxilary Air Force respectively.

Mr Lewin, 88, said of their 60 years together: "An understanding and a willingness to sort stuff through is very important."

They celebrated their diamond anniversary by going for a special meal this month with some close friends.

The couple have two sons and three grandchildren, who all currently live in Australia.
