HOUNSLOW borough residents celebrated the Royal Wedding in style, with a four-day party in some places to toast the union of Kate Middleton and Prince William.

Bunting was put up in streets and shop windows up and down the borough in preparation for the wedding on Friday morning.

Many residents spent hours planning events, including Julia Quilliam from Brentford who worked with local friends and businesses to plan a huge get together.

Brentford was divided into different areas with activities ranging from traditional games such as archery in The Butts, to a DJ set and Zumba dancing in The Piazza.

Mrs Quilliam said she thinks around 10,000 people came throughout the day.

She said: "It was excellent, really good, but I am exhausted now. More people came than I ever imagined and so many people got involved to help, which was wonderful. There was no trouble at all, Brentford did us proud."

The party started on Friday and ran right through to Bank Holiday Monday at The Swan Pub in Hanworth.

Landlady Tara Dawson organised a range of entertainment throughout the four day weekend including a bouncy castle and stalls.

The event was held to raise money for charities including the Shooting Star Children's Hospice.

Her boyfriend Garry Nesbitt, who helps her run the pub, said: "It was fantastic, and the atmosphere was very good.

"We wanted to hold a fun fair but couldn't because the weather was supposed to be rain, but it didn't matter. Everyone had a great time."

The total money raised is yet to be counted.

Hounslow Council received more than 12 applications for street parties in the borough, and approved them all.

Berkeley Primary School, in Cranford Lane, Heston, held its own royal wedding, with staff playing the roles of Kate and William, last Thursday.

The 'bride', teacher Nav Bhatti, and 'groom', caretaker John Foster, made their way through the playground followed by the wedding march, while youngsters dressed up to the nines waved their flags under the bunting.

Pupils then led a rousing rendition of the national anthem before tucking into cucumber sandwiches and scones.

At Orchard Primary School, in Hounslow, pupils enjoyed a royal feast on Thursday before taking part in traditional games like a sack race and three-legged race.

Over at the Hounslow Multicultural Centre, in Derby Road, Hounslow, visitors were treated to a slap-up lunch and music on Wednesday to celebrate the big day in advance.
