For some people the beginning of the festive season is marked by the switching on of the lights in Oxford Street.
For others it is when mince pies and tinsel line supermarket shelves.
But the Gazette's Christmas clock is set when when we team up with Ealing North MP Steve Pound to select a winner in his annual card design competition.
A colourful creation by Hobbayne Primary schoolgirl Charys Bestley is this year's winner from more than 1,000 entries from Key Stage 2 pupils across 18 schools in Ealing North. Charys's design depicts three carol singers whose composure is tested by the Artful Dodger who peeps into the picture.
The theme 'My first Christmas' was the inspiraton behind all of the entries.
Mr Pound said: "All of the entries were outstanding. It's marvellous in an increasingly marginalised world that the magic of Christmas can still cross every boundary."
The winner's design will now be printed on to around 2,000 cards for the politician to send to the great and good of Westminster and Ealing.
The back will carry the designs of five runners-up, who are Oliver Cheung of Selborne Primary, Dafina Shatrolli, of Downe Manor, Jathusan Srithar, of Perivale Primary, James Buchan, of St Joseph's Catholic Primary, and Maleeha Khan, of Chilton School.
