A nursery that offers affordable play for hard-up families has raised £55,000 to build a new playground.

Ray’s Playhouse, in Sands End, Fulham, reached its target after a year of fundraising and generous donations from Fulham Preparatory School, The Clothworkers Foundation and John Lyons Foundation.

The outdoor play area, designed by specialists Sutcliffe, includes a large sand pit, paddling pool and climbing frame, will replace their 13-year-old playground.

Staff hope to raise a further £25,000 to buy water play equipment.

Nursery manager Sue Lamb said: “We are delighted that we have finally been given the go-ahead for this project.

“The current playground is over 13 years old and the new outdoor area will provide a stimulating, safe environment for our children to explore and gain independence and provide challenging and achievable physical activities.”

Work will begin on the playground in November and is due to finish by February next year. Parts of the outdoor area will remain open during construction, including the sensory garden.

The Stephendale Road nursery, formerly the Sands End Playhouse, reopened as a not-for-profit venture in 2011 after funding was cut by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

It provides daily sessions for children under five for as little as £3 per family per visit.
