THAT Vince Cable, a former professional economist with brains, opposes charging for the use of Richmond Park, is disappointing. He should know that Richmond Park is an overused resource.

Anyone who visits the park on a summer weekend and witnesses the queues in front of every single parking lot can see that. Even more appropriate than the discussed parking charges would be toll charges for the roads.

This is not a debate of rich versus poor, it is a generational debate. And we all, irrespective of wealth, have a responsibility towards preserving what is, in my view, the most beautiful park within the M25.
